The Forest Theater has a history as rich and varied as that of Carmel-by-the-Sea itself. In 1908 poet-dramatist Herbert Heron and several of the Carmel-by-the-Sea pioneers of the local arts scene, most notably Mary Austin and author Michael Williams, conceived the idea of an outdoor theater in the forest.
