VOLUNTEERING CHANGES LIVES!

The Volunteer Center of Monterey County acts as a clearinghouse for locating and referring volunteers to more than 450 non-profit and public agencies in the County. Only a few of the many available positions are listed below. Please call for an appointment.

Gift Wrappers (Monterey):
The Christmas shopping season is just around the corner! This non-profit agency will be wrapping gifts at Del Monte Shopping Center in exchange for donations and need a few volunteers who would like to help out with this fundraiser. Training will be provided on Saturday, November 8. This gift wrapping fundraiser will take place Friday, November 28 to Sunday, November 30, and then again Monday, December 15 to Wednesday , December 17. Call now to reserve your shift! Volunteers should be ages 16 and older, please (earn community service credit).

Receptionist (Monterey):
A person with excellent communication skills would be a big help at this wonderful agency. They need a receptionist to answer phones on Fridays.

Fundraising Help (Salinas, Monterey):
This agency deals with fundraising on an international level. Be part of this fundraising effort by drumming up interest in local schools. We need volunteers who are good with adults and children, and like to speak in front of small groups.

Food Drive Helper (Salinas, Peninsula):
This food bank hopes to receive lots of donations this holiday season. Volunteers ages 13 and up are needed to stand outside of malls and grocery stores and hand out flyers telling the public about their services. This opportunity is available for the weekend of November 21 - 24, and again on November 28 – 30. Volunteers should dress warmly.

Childcare provider (King City):
If you have ever thought about a career as a childcare giver, or teacher, here is a great opportunity for you! A King City preschool would like a helper to play, read, paint, and participate in small group activities with children. This position is available from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a one hour break at 11:00 a.m. Must be at least 18 years old.

Toy repair (Salinas):
Are you a person who likes to tinker with toys to see what makes them tick? This library lends out toys instead of books. Naturally, these toys need to be repaired from time to time so that children can continue to enjoy them. This "toy repairperson" can work from home or from the library. Some basic tools are available for repairperson’s use.

After school volunteer (Marina):
Eight adult volunteers are needed to supervise and play with kids ages 5-12 or ages 13-19. Volunteers would be needed from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Brand new non-profit agency (Salinas):
A brand new non-profit agency is starting up in Salinas! They would like 2 people who can write letters, do basic accounting, file paperwork, and help with grant applications and grant research online. This agency works with small groups of children from time to time, and so volunteers will also help with guided activities. This agency would also like to get into contact with a photographer, musicians, and people with sewing skills so that they can call them when they have an event coming up. Since this is a new agency, they need lots of help with a variety of projects. Here’s your chance to be part of an exciting new organization at its inception! If you’d like to help, call today!

Legal Service Volunteer (Monterey):
A bilingual person with at least one year of legal secretarial experience is needed to help 2 to 3 hours a day in the morning at this legal office. Job duties include, but are not limited to, correspondence, maintaining follow up records, assisting in library maintenance, providing support in short term legal projects and translation / interpretation (English to Spanish). Anyone who wishes to apply for this position should be able to type 60 wpm, and should have knowledge of Microsoft Windows 95/98. This person should also be completely comfortable working independently, working with a staff, and working with clients and community organizations.

Volunteer Ventures (Salinas):
The Volunteer Center is launching a new program called “Volunteer Ventures” and we need some help organizing. Volunteer Ventures is a group of busy, hardworking adults who provide extra hands for special evening and weekend group projects at non-profit agencies. This group will meet monthly. The Volunteer Center will provide support, and volunteer help is needed to organize and help plan the launch. If you’d like to meet fun, interesting people, then Volunteer Ventures is the place!

Planting Crew Volunteers (Seaside):
This agency hopes to educate children about the environment, and at the same time, to restore natural waterways. You can help to restore natural habitats by planting trees, watering, and pulling weeds. Volunteers are needed weekends for either cleanup days, or plantings days. Groups are welcome, so bring some friends! All you need are comfortable shoes that can get a little dirty, and comfortable layers of clothes. Gloves, tools, and snacks will be provided!
