Parent Update 9/1/2008

Dear Parents and families,

I hope you all had a nice Labor Day weekend.! Here are just a few important reminders for the week.

Our fieldtrip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been postponed until January 22nd. We had requested a change in the date several weeks ago to take advantage of the low tides around that time of year in order to take the students tidepooling. We were told that the change was very unlikely and so we went with the first date. Of course, the day we sent out the permission slips, we received notice of the change of date. So, our fieldtrip will still happen but at the later date.

We do have another fieldtrip coming on September 24th to the Monterey State Historic Parks for a program on Native Americans. We will need drivers and chaperones for this program. Please look for fieldtrip details and permission slips to come home next week. This program will cost $10 each.

Back to School night will be this Thursday night, September 4th from 6:30 – 8pm. We will all meet in the multiuse room first followed by classroom visits. I look forward to seeing you all at this important event. I won’t be able to meet with parents about their individual student at this time but will be happy to schedule a meeting on a future date.

We will begin Book Clubs this week with the whole class reading, Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli. We will continue with learning how to use the spelling program with a new set of words for the class and move to different spelling groups next week after we analyze the spelling test data. Look for little baggies of words coming home to study and sort. In Math we will continue our study of geometry and use of compasses. We will finish Unit 1 by the end of the week. We will continue learning geography and mapping skills as we add pages to our Student Atlases and begin our science unit entitled, Earth’s Changing Surfaces. I also hope to begin working in the computer lab this week to begin working on keyboarding skills and adding to our knowledge of geography.

I hope to see you on Thursday night at Back-to-School Night!
